Thermal (heat) vibration

Thermally Agitated Molecule

... molecules are complicated objects; they are a group of atoms that can move about within a molecule in different ways.

  1. Thermal (heat) vibrating of a segment of protein alpha helix: The speed of the vibrations increases with temperature.

  2. We don't need to know what a protein alpha helix is in detail.
  3.
  4. We are interested in molecules.

  5. They are tightly bound collections of atoms held together by the electromagnetic fields of the atoms. Molecules, like atoms, emit throw out and absorb photons see below at specific wavelengths.
  6. ----------------------------------------
  7. Scientists have long understood that heat travels through vibrations.

  8. Molecules vibrate faster and faster as they heat up, and their vibrations cause other molecules around them to vibrate as well, warming cooler nearby molecules.

  9. For decades this was the only known way heat could be transferred in organic molecules

Looking again at protein alpha helix as above, our key word is protein which is a key aspect of life and growth.
