My son wants a telescope

  1. My son wants a telescope to view planets, specifically Jupiter and Saturn. Is there any telescope I could buy .. that would be able to clearly see planets in our system?

  2. Please, do not run out and buy a telescope! I’ve seen so many people who’ve become disillusioned with amateur astronomy because they bought a telescope they weren’t ready to use.
  3.

  4. It’s not as easy to get good images with a telescope as many people might imagine. I always describe it as looking at the sky through a drinking straw.

  5. Don’t get me wrong — I love astronomy, and I love using my telescopes. But it really is an acquired taste.

  6. I strongly suggest you see if there are public star parties in your area. These are great opportunities to have local enthusiasts show you the sky with their own equipment and tell you about what you’re seeing.

  7. You’ll get a much better sense of what you can expect and what kind of equipment you might want to consider buying for yourself.
