Ballcock

 

Imagine water pipes attached to both ends of the brass piece.  When the toilet is flushed after use, there's little water in the tank.  The ball sinks and a valve (water switch) opens and releases water into the tank.

Lift the lid carefully and you may be lucky.  There's many types of water control in loos.
